How We Tested

The Zevo Flying Insect Trap was evaluated by 11 judges and consumer testers, including experts in consumer products, packaging and sustainability. Zevo shipped samples directly to participants, as coordinated by Best of the Year.

During July and August, participants set up and used the traps in their homes according to the manufacturer’s directions. Consumer testers used it in their own kitchens, bathrooms and living spaces and observed its performance over several weeks, watching what it attracted and caught.

Expert judges also considered the trap’s design, technology and its performance and marketing claims. Best of the Year analysts reviewed the product's entry materials, completed tester and judge scorecards alongside their own experience using the device before reaching a decision.

What Experts and Consumer Testers Said

The testers who lived with it were won over by how simple and invisible it is. A consmer tester ran it for more than a month and led with the setup and the discretion: "It's very easy to set up. Just so incredibly simple," she said, and "I also love that it's very discreet and you barely notice it." What sealed it for her was that it delivers on the thing that actually matters. A second tester, was just as sold on the convenience, calling it "a very effective trap" that you "simply plug it in, and let it work," with no fragrance and no sound. Her one bit of friction was practical, finding a conveniently located outlet, though she noted the head can swivel 90 degrees to help.

Our experts arrived at the same place from a more technical angle. They valued that it works quietly in the background instead of relying on sprays, zappers, or swatting. A consumer tester and an entomologist by profession put it through an unusually tough real-world test. As someone who works outside and is around insects constantly, she watched them thin out and then disappear over the days she ran it: "Eventually, I stopped seeing fruit flies around," she wrote, reasoning that if it can handle the insects a field worker brings in, it can handle an average household's. It helps to know what this trap does best. One expert found it "highly effective for smaller gnats, but mediocre for larger houseflies that are the main offender," and most other reviewers agreed it works best for small flyers.

Another expert who lives in the South, where flying critters are part of the summer, was pleasantly surprised, though. "I was actually surprised when mine caught a regular house fly too. I think it works best for the smaller flying bugs, but seeing a full-size fly on there definitely made me feel like it was doing more than I expected," she said.

Zevo is intended for indoor use and is not designed for mosquitoes. Reviewers found it worked better in dimmer spaces than in bright, sun-filled rooms.
