How We Tested

Best of the Year analysts and editors reviewed Raddish Kids' cooking and baking subscription boxes awards entry and submitted materials, with some also cooking the recipes with their own families. Seven parenting and food judges, including registered dietitians and experts bringing a child-development lens, then evaluated the kits themselves: the recipes, how instructions were presented, what kids could learn from them, the design and quality of the included tools and the overall value. They also considered whether Raddish was simply giving families something fun to do or actually helping kids build cooking skills they could use again. Subject-matter experts completed a separate review of the packaging and related claims.

Then we sent the boxes home with nine consumer testers to use with their own kids over several weeks, with Raddish supplying the kits and Best of the Year coordinating distribution. Families cooked through the recipes and used the included tools just as they would if the boxes were arriving month after month. That gave us a chance to see how Raddish worked in real kitchens: whether kids stayed interested, how much help they needed from a parent, whether the recipes were easy to follow and, of course, whether anyone wanted to eat what they made.

Consumer testers completed scorecards rating overall quality, ease of use, how engaging and age-appropriate the experience was, and their likelihood to recommend or subscribe. They also told us what their kids loved, what they would change, and how the experience worked for their family in practice.

What Experts and Consumer Testers Said

Our experts loved that Raddish doesn't underestimate kids. The recipes teach actual cooking skills, but the instructions are broken down and illustrated in a way that makes the process approachable. One registered dietitian on our panel particularly liked the quality of the tools, recipe cards and background information included in each box.

Our judges also liked how much learning Raddish manages to tuck into the experience. Depending on the box, kids may encounter food culture, science, a new technique or an ingredient they haven't tried before. But from their perspective, they're making something to eat. One expert summed it up as “scaffolded, connection-rich skill-building, all in one shared activity.”

The families who tested Raddish had fun with it, too. One parent of a 4- and 6-year-old told us both children got involved, although in different ways: her younger child was eager to help while the older one could follow more of the directions. The themes, colorful materials and anticipation of discovering what was inside each box helped make cooking feel like an activity rather than a chore.

And there's something about giving kids their own kitchen equipment that shouldn't be underestimated. Rather than always being Mom or Dad's helper, they get their own tool and a recipe they can increasingly take ownership of as their skills grow. One of our experts also thought the surprise element made Raddish particularly giftable: “It's a fun surprise to open the box and see what the cooking project and lesson are. Parents should know that the ingredients aren't included, so you'll need to shop before you cook. And this isn't necessarily a hand-the-box-to-your-five-year-old-and-walk-away activity. Younger kids will need an adult alongside them, and some of our testers thought certain recipes were better suited to slightly older children. Then again, cooking together is kind of the point.

Our packaging expert found something else to like once everything had been unpacked. Raddish uses less packaging, with the shipping box doing double-duty as the product packaging and very little plastic waste. That's especially nice for something that's going to arrive at your doorstep month after month. Raddish has also been doing this for more than a decade.
