How We Tested

Unlike our other entries, the Douglas Summit Hybrid Mattress was an international entry and is available exclusively in Canada (bonus for our Canadian readers, less awesome for the Americans, who might start to feel a little envious after reading), so all hands-on testing was conducted north of the border.

In line with the brand's delivery option for all customers, queen- and king-sized Douglas mattresses were delivered directly from the parent company, Good Morning, through the brand’s standard delivery process, which varies by region. Evaluators slept on them at home for several weeks before completing their scorecards. Two testers also returned to them after weeks of holiday.

Our judges evaluated the Douglas Summit Hybrid Mattress for construction, comfort, support, cushioning, materials, cooling features and overall value, while our consumer testers reported on firmness, feel, comfort and the experience of actually living with the mattress night after night. We also considered the mattress’s construction and performance against its claims, along with the online buying experience, trial period, warranty and overall value.

What Experts and Consumer Testers Said

This one won on execution and value, not on some revolutionary new mattress idea, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. It's a coil-and-foam mattress: springs underneath do the supporting while layers of foam provide cushioning on top. Pretty straightforward. But it does those jobs very well while costing considerably less than many premium hybrid mattresses.

Our category experts liked the balance, too: supportive without feeling like a hard floor and cushioned without letting you sink deeply into the mattress. One told us, “I liked the balance of firmness and cushioning. It feels supportive without feeling like you are sleeping on a hard surface, and you do not sink deeply into it.”

Firmness is also the big thing to know before you order. The Summit Hybrid sleeps on the firmer side, and that's going to be a plus for some sleepers and a hard no for others. If you love a soft mattress that lets you really sink in, this probably isn't your bed. If you prefer a more solid, supported feel, there's a lot to like.

And don't necessarily make the call after night one. A new mattress can take time to break in, and your body may need some time to adjust, too. That's where the long at-home trial becomes more than a nice perk.

There were a couple of areas where our judges saw room for improvement. Edge support and motion across the bed didn't impress us as much as the overall comfort, construction and value, something to keep in mind if you regularly sleep right at the edge or share the bed with someone who tosses and turns.

But value was the throughline. You get a Canadian-made hybrid with cooling materials, substantial cushioning, a long at-home trial and warranty for well under the price of many premium mattresses.

There are some things to like beyond the sleeping experience, too. Douglas says its foam, fabric and packaging are sourced in Canada, and our sustainability judges noted the compressed shipping, recycled-content packaging and the company's practice of donating usable returned mattresses rather than automatically sending them to landfill.

They also wanted to see more measured environmental data from the company, particularly around materials and lifecycle impact. There's a good story here; we'd just like Douglas to show more of its work.

Canadian mattress shoppers, this one's for you. You can spend a whole lot more on a mattress, but we're not convinced you need to. This award-winning Douglas Summit Hybrid feels substantial, supportive and well-made, with enough cushioning to keep a firm bed comfortable. If you like to really sink into your mattress, this probably isn't your bed. But if firm and supportive sounds just right? Take advantage of the long trial and sleep on it.
